Today is International Orangutan Day. According to the WWF, orangutan populations have declined by around 50% over the past 60 years. This incredible species used to roam as far north as southern China, and as far south as the Indonesian island of Java. Today they’re only found on two islands – Sumatra and Borneo, and Earth Active has been working to protect them across both.
In Sumatra, we have been working with Mount Leuser National Park to protect invaluable orangutan habitat from encroachment and deforestation. In Kalimantan, Borneo, we have been working to prevent road developments from negatively impacting orangutans, and to safeguard remaining local habitats that can support this species into the future.
